Race Reports

Welcome Race Fans!

For years, my family has been spending the month of May, or at least the last Sunday in May, at the Indianapolis 500. In fact, my brother has figured out that he has been to the last 40 Indy 500s. My mother has been to more than that. In fact before the Hulmans bought the racetrack, my grandfather considered buying it. Thankfully that never happened. I am positive the Hulmans did a much better job with the racetrack than my grandfather could have.

My Garage Visit

Race Car Gas StationLast May I had the opportunity to go into the garage area for the first time. Besides seeing all the garages and race cars, I got to see all the drivers and all the fans pestering them for autographs. Danika Patrick was one of the popular drivers when I was there. I saw her car and her back up car. But, she was no where to be seen. I did get to see other drivers and lots of crew members. But unless you know what a driver looks like, which I don't, you could be walking right beside one any never know it. That happened to me. It was one of the rookies. I didn't know it until someone asked for his autograph. Oh well. I got lots of interesting photos.

Mascot with tiresThe cars would stop by the gas station to get filled up before they went out for practice. When they were done for the day, they would return to the gas station to get the fuel taken out of the car. There are all sorts of rules about fuel and how much can be in the car for qualifying and the start of the race. They have special tanks for the cars to use on race day.

The mascot was fun to watch. He would tease the drivers and crew. One time while playing around he knocked down a stack of tires as one of the crews were returning to the garage.

Trophy

The Borg-Warner Trophy is place on the yard of bricks at the start/finish line for all to see. For those of you who don't know, this trophy has the faces of each winner of the Indy 500.

(The trophy image is a low quality image. For a better quality image, just click on the photo. It might take a while to load with some internet connections.)
