Thursday April 23, 1998 chat with Wortham Krimmer

16:56:55  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Hello.  I'm  Wortham Krimmer but everyone calls me Bob.

16:57:10  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I appeared on  Babylon 5 as Cartagia, had a blast and am yhere to field any questions  anyone may have about that character.

 16:58:00  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I'm available to  take a questions

16:58:15  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I play the  character Reverend Andrew Carpenter on ABC's One Life to Live.

16:58:23  wortham_krimmer {public msg} So you can look  for me on that show.

 16:58:33  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Any questions?

17:00:42  wortham_krimmer {public msg} My name is  Wortham Krimmer but everyone calls me Bob.

 17:01:02  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I can take  questions now.

17:01:26  Moderator {public msg} I was in AOL and they  wanted to know what was it like haveing Vir "knock you off"

 17:01:42  wortham_krimmer {public msg} *laugh*

 17:01:48  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Having Vir kill  you ...

17:01:55  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Well you know  it's not a pleasant experience ot have anyone kill you

17:02:04  wortham_krimmer {public msg} But if I HAD to  choose someone to stop my heart, it'd definitely be Vir...

17:02:32  wortham_krimmer {public msg} He did it with  such compassion ... and with such clear ambivalence ... I appreciate  that... I could see there was a part that wanted me to live.

 17:02:36  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next?

17:02:38  Anlashok_na {question presented} Thanks for  dropping in to chat with us, was it good to play a character that is so  completely different than your character on OLTL?

17:03:14  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Yeah, absolutely!  It was refreshing and really got the acting juices flowing

17:03:30  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Joe and John and  the directors had to continually pull me back ... I was really having  too good a time.

 17:03:34  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next?

17:03:38  Doctor Rock {question presented} do you find  actors playing villains to often have the best sense of humor in  reality

17:04:13  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Oh!  I suppose  you could argue that good villainy comes from a bizarre sense of humor,  but that might be a tough argument to sell.  I thought Cartagia had a  terrific sense of humor

 17:04:18  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I just thought  ... no body got it.

 17:04:20  wortham_krimmer {public msg} But he was funny!

 17:04:23  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next?

17:04:28  Ulysses {question presented} Wortham... err, I  mean, Bob! ;-)  Did anyone ever ask you whether your name was genuine  or "made up"?

17:04:45  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Well, all names  are made up Ulysses...

 17:05:44  wortham_krimmer {public msg} In terms of the  hair....

17:06:07  wortham_krimmer {public msg} That was my real  hair.  To be perfectly honest, I took a liking to that hair style and I  wear it regularly once or twice a week.  In NY ... no body cares.

17:06:19  wortham_krimmer {public msg} They use this  French hairspray ... and they put your hair where they want it and I'm  telling you it won't move.

17:06:43  wortham_krimmer {public msg} It washes out  with water -- miraculously, and it leaves your hair so shiny and bouncy  it's WONDERFUL!

 17:06:45  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next question?

17:07:05  Deboss1 {question presented} what other films  or shows have you appeared in?

17:07:44  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Currently, One  Life to Live (last seven years) and I've done Days of Our Lives, The  Paper Chase series (four years), Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere ...  It's a huge list!

 17:07:56  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I've been very  lucky, very blessed.

 17:08:14  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I've primarily  done stage and television. I 've basically been a television actor

 17:08:21  wortham_krimmer {public msg} because that's  where the work was coming

17:08:29  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I've also been  really lucky because most of my jobs have been very long term

 17:08:35  wortham_krimmer {public msg} 4 years, 7 years  ...

 17:08:43  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I'm talking 14  years of steady work.

 17:08:49  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next Question?

17:09:05  Anlashok_na {question presented} What did your  friends and family say about you playing a psychotic lunatic?

 17:09:20  wortham_krimmer {public msg} They said "Are  you acting?"

 17:09:26  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next Question?

17:09:55  Karen {question presented} what was it like  working with Peter and andreas

 17:10:14  wortham_krimmer {public msg} The best!

 17:10:18  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Absolute best!

 17:10:23  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I couldn't have  worked with two better guys.

17:10:45  wortham_krimmer {public msg} But working at  Babylon 5 was like homecoming week for me becuase I'd worked with Bruce  on Scarecrow, I'd played a terrorist that kidnapped him and tortured  him...

17:10:57  wortham_krimmer {public msg} It was great to  see him.  Set designer and costumers are all old friends

17:11:10  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I was amazed at  how many people I knew (Wayne Alexander is an old old friend)

17:11:29  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Peter was a hero  of mine because I did a lot of stuff at MTM and he was working over  there in the early 80's and really repsected his work.

17:11:41  wortham_krimmer {public msg} When I found out  I was going to be working with him, I was very excited.

 17:11:53  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next question?

17:11:56  Doctor Rock {question presented} were you  aware of the similarities between your character cartagia and the roman  emporer Claigula, if so did you source any method from the numerous  people who have played that role before, noteably John Hurt in "I  CLaudius"

17:12:26  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Yeah ... most  definitely.  With a little Oscar Wilde thrown in.

 17:12:37  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next Question?

17:12:50  Deboss1 {question presented} It's always great  to hear of any actor finding long term success. What resources did you  look to for finding the Cartagia character (personalities of history,  etc)?

17:13:44  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Joe's writing, I  found that pretty much as soon as I got the scripts from Joe, and read  the arc from the five episodes and really watched his words... they  conveyed to me a very specific character

17:14:00  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I thought it was  very clear in the writing.  IThere's an old saying that if it isn't on  the page it's not on the stage.

17:14:19  Karen {question presented} What was it like  working with Joe?

17:14:23  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I depended a lot  on David Eagle and Joe and John's input but that's how it developed ...  it definitely developed and it was a real specific character.

17:14:50  wortham_krimmer {public msg} He's quiet and  insightful and so that when he does say something you really listen.   Because he picks his words carefully.

17:15:06  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I could tell whne  he liked what i was doing and when he felt it should go in a different  direction.  I found his input very very useful.

17:15:14  wortham_krimmer {public msg} He's a very  experienced guy.  You depend on those kinds of people.

 17:15:18  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next question?

17:15:23  Miltin {question presented} was it fun playing  cartagia

17:16:02  wortham_krimmer {public msg} It was not hard  work it was complete fun.  As a matter of fact, Peter said to me  "You've seemed to tapped into something inside you that's SO Cartagia"

17:16:11  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I said No Peter,  I'm standing here having as much fun as I can.

 17:16:19  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Maybe that's the  beauty of being an Emperor...

 17:16:22  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next question?

17:16:28  Karen {question presented} Since you live and  work in NYC, how did you get a job in LA?

17:17:05  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Well, I'm  bi-coastal.  I have a home in LA and I fly back and forth constantly.   I got it through the regular channels... you know agent: audition from  Fern Champion and Mark Paladini ...

17:17:18  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Paladini  remembered me from a previous read and brought me back for this part.

17:17:32  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I read for Mark,  Fern, John and Joe and I fooled them again!

 17:17:34  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next Question?

17:17:52  Lord_Graf {question presented} When did you  see the episodes you where in for the first time.  When they were on TV  or private showings?

17:18:17  wortham_krimmer {public msg} No, I saw them  ... an editor at one life to live is a tremendous B5 fan and she taped  all the shows for me when they aired

17:18:29  wortham_krimmer {public msg} She brought them  into work and gave them to me and that's when I ifirst saw them

 17:18:33  wortham_krimmer {public msg} (continued)

 17:18:41  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I thought that  I'd accomplished what I set out to accomplish

17:18:49  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I walked that  fine line between Cartoon and Reality.

17:18:59  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I wanted to just  hit that line and come as close to that line as I possibly could.

17:19:08  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I wanted to push  the envelope with only a couple of times going too far.

17:19:17  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I liked how the  standpoint started as "I kinda like this guy"

17:19:28  wortham_krimmer {public msg} and then toward  the end his innate madness came out so you saw that more.

17:19:40  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I enjoyed it ...  I'm way past that thing where I'm unable to look at my performances.

17:19:56  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I'm able to look  at that stuff and like it or not like it and I'm able to judge it well.

 17:19:59  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next question?

17:20:01  Anlashok_na {question presented} Would you  ever consider playing an alien with all the makeup, maybe in Crusade?

 17:20:16  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Well, that's an  excellent question.

17:20:31  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I would much  prefer in all honesty to play a character that didn't have to come in  at 3 a.m. and begin the makeup process.

17:20:45  wortham_krimmer {public msg} But if that was  what was required in order to work at Babylon 5 again I'd jump at the  opportunity.

 17:20:55  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I really don't  think people would recognize me as they

17:21:04  wortham_krimmer {public msg} thought they  might without the makeup and the hair

 17:21:21  wortham_krimmer {public msg} ...

17:21:36  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I think I'd be  one of those characters who doesn't have to hide behind make up to  change tmy appeareance

 17:21:44  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Maybe I could  play a descendant of Cartagia...

 17:21:56  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Wouldn't it be  interesting if

17:22:11  wortham_krimmer {public msg} a descendent of  Cartagia felt the need to atone and find goodness in the world...

 17:22:21  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next Question?

17:22:24  Karen {question presented} How long were youin  the ;make up chair for cartagia?

 17:22:33  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Not long at all.

 17:22:38  wortham_krimmer {public msg} 30 minutes or 40  mins max

 17:22:41  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next question?

 17:22:46  wortham_krimmer {public msg} 30 mins hair ...  30 mins makeup

17:22:50  wortham_krimmer {public msg} NOTHING like what  Peter or Andreas endure

17:23:01  Karen {question presented} Did you like your  costume?  Was it heavy adn cumbersome?

 17:23:09  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I didn't like it,  I ADORED it.

17:23:15  wortham_krimmer {public msg} As a matter of  fact when I put this costume on

 17:23:23  wortham_krimmer {public msg} When did I find  the character

 17:23:30  wortham_krimmer {public msg} it was when I'd  been given the costume

17:23:50  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Anne the costume  director talked to me about how to handle the large overcoat and cape

17:23:54  wortham_krimmer {public msg} and how to drape  that over the throne.

17:24:07  wortham_krimmer {public msg} That was a  brilliant thing because that was instruction on how to use the costume  as how royalty would use it

 17:24:19  wortham_krimmer {public msg} The costume  department is really wonderful at Babylon5

17:24:27  wortham_krimmer {public msg} They are sweet,  educated and really wonderful people to work with.

 17:24:30  wortham_krimmer {public msg} NExt question?

17:24:51  Lord_Graf {question presented} What are you  planing on doing now, or in the near future?

 17:25:32  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I'm going to do  One Life to Live.

17:25:40  wortham_krimmer {public msg} And I then am  going to see where the Fates take me.

17:25:43  wortham_krimmer {public msg} One never knows  in this business.

 17:25:46  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next question?

17:25:50  Assimiltr {question presented} How may I  obtain an 8x10 autographed glossy of you?

17:26:33  wortham_krimmer {public msg} and if I can  convince B5 people to send me Cartagia

 17:26:38  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I'll be happy to  autograph those as well.

 17:26:41  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next question?

17:26:43  NowaY {question presented} Who was the  funniest person on the show?

17:27:05  wortham_krimmer {public msg} That would be a  toss up between Peter and Stephen both of whom had me laughing right up  to action.

17:27:15  wortham_krimmer {public msg} There were times  when I didn't know if I could have a straight face before the scene  began.

 17:27:19  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Andreas is also  very funny

 17:27:21  wortham_krimmer {public msg} but in a dry way.

 17:27:25  wortham_krimmer {public msg} next question?

17:27:30  Karen {question presented} was that real blood  on your hands?

17:27:38  Moderator {action} We only have about 10 or 15  minutes left.

 17:27:41  wortham_krimmer {public msg} *evil laugh*

 17:27:45  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I'll never  tell....

 17:27:50  wortham_krimmer {public msg} But I AM a method  actor...

 17:27:54  wortham_krimmer {public msg} NExt question?

17:28:03  Karen {question presented} was the B5 really  that nice to work with, like the magazines say?

 17:28:14  wortham_krimmer {public msg} YES!

 17:28:16  wortham_krimmer {public msg} YES YES YES YES  YES

17:28:20  wortham_krimmer {public msg} In this case you  CAN believe the press

 17:28:27  wortham_krimmer {public msg} And I play a  minister on TV ...  Iwouldn't lie to you.

 17:28:31  wortham_krimmer {public msg} next question?

17:28:39  Karen {question presented} Cartagia has a bit  of a "swish" to his walk, was that your idea?

 17:28:52  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I believe that  sexual preference is a private matter

 17:28:57  wortham_krimmer {public msg} next question?

17:29:07  Assimiltr {question presented} Do you have an  official web site?

17:29:40  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I'm in the  process of developing one ... EVEN as we speak

 17:29:50  wortham_krimmer {public msg} It'll be a  website for me as an actor.

17:29:59  Reschell {question presented} Cartagia was a  wonderful character -- evilly capricious -- were there any characters  that you wish you could have interacted with beyond Londo & G'Kar?

 17:30:02  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I do have a fan  club but it's not online.

 17:30:29  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I don't know that  there's a character on B5 that I wouldn't have wanted to act beside.

17:30:36  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Rick Biggs was an  old friend from Days of Our Lives

17:30:44  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Would have loved  to work with Bruce again from Scarecrow days.

 17:30:54  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I enjoy  everyone's work on that show, I think it's a very talented cast.

 17:30:56  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next question?

17:30:58  Anlashok_na {question presented} Was there one  scene that stood out for you as being your best?

17:31:21  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Oh I don't know  about best, but I certainly enjoyed the washing the blood off the hands  scene.  I enjoyed the electrowhip scene.

17:31:36  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I thought Andreas  was brilliant in that scene.   Those would be the two

 17:31:39  wortham_krimmer {public msg} next question?

17:31:43  Assimiltr {question presented} Any time for  Conventions?

17:32:19  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I just got a call  to participate in a B5 convention in LA in September or October.  But  it'll be in LA and I was told many cast members would attend and asked  if I would, I said I could attend -- schedule permitting.

 17:32:23  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next question?

17:32:26  Reschell {question presented} when you are  remembering lines, do you "hear" them or visualize the script page?

 17:32:39  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Neither.

 17:32:42  wortham_krimmer {public msg} ....

17:32:57  wortham_krimmer {public msg} By the time I'm  performing, the dialogue is coming to me in exactly the same way my  normal speech comes to me.

17:33:06  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Intuitively,  instinctively and without conscious effort.

 17:33:09  wortham_krimmer {public msg} next question?

17:33:21  Karen {question presented} do you prefer soaps  over dramatic weekly shows?

 17:33:29  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I prefer work.

 17:33:34  wortham_krimmer {public msg} next question?

 17:33:37  wortham_krimmer {public msg} acting is acting  ...

17:33:42  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Just happy to be  doing the work.

17:33:48  Karen {question presented} did you always want  to act?

17:33:55  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I do like doing  soaps a lot though because I have a wife and two children and the  schedule is better.

 17:34:04  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Yeah.

 17:34:10  wortham_krimmer {public msg} It was a  calling...

 17:34:12  wortham_krimmer {public msg} next?

 17:34:19  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I don't think I'd  be happy doing anything else.

17:34:21  Karen {question presented} would you like to  do B5 again as an alien?

 17:34:27  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I'm very happy  just acting?

17:34:40  Moderator {action} we have time for one or two  more quesitons.

17:34:50  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Sure I'll do it  as an alien but I'd prefer to come back with less time in the chair

 17:34:54  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Next?

17:35:12  Karen {question presented} do you think  Cartagia could pull off a scene in One Life?

 17:35:27  wortham_krimmer {public msg} *laugh*

 17:35:31  wortham_krimmer {public msg} That's a great  question!

 17:35:37  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I don't know ...  yeah sure!

 17:35:42  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I think the  ratings would soar!

17:35:55  wortham_krimmer {public msg} We could do a one  life to live story line where a spaceship crashes into Landview

 17:35:58  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Out comes  Cartagia!

17:36:05  wortham_krimmer {public msg} The Shadows  banish him to Earth

 17:36:13  wortham_krimmer {public msg} to Landview!

17:36:21  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Condemning him to  spend his existence in Landview

 17:36:22  wortham_krimmer {public msg} PA

17:36:22  Reschell {question presented} is there any  theatrical role that you would feel truly grateful to be cast in?

 17:36:30  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Where he  befriends Rev. Carpenter.

17:36:49  wortham_krimmer {public msg} He would of  course have the narcissistic drive because they look so similar!

 17:36:52  wortham_krimmer {public msg} They would trade  clothes.

 17:37:03  wortham_krimmer {public msg} last question:

 17:37:11  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Lear

 17:37:23  wortham_krimmer {public msg} King Lear,  Shakespeare

 17:37:29  wortham_krimmer {public msg} When I'm much  older, I'd love to play that

 17:37:30  Moderator {public msg} comment not a question

 17:37:33  Karen {question presented} Reverend Cartagia??

17:37:42  NowaY {question presented} WHat is the meaning  of life?

17:37:53  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I'd be blessed to  play it to take a lifetime of experience to play it

17:38:02  wortham_krimmer {public msg} And then I would  love to be one of the Rug Rats!~

17:38:27  wortham_krimmer {public msg} The meaning of  life (last answer here)

 17:38:30  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Love.

17:38:36  wortham_krimmer {public msg} Thank you very  much for having me here.

 17:38:47  wortham_krimmer {public msg} I've had a blast  with the B5 audience and this chat

 17:38:56  wortham_krimmer {public msg} You're all very  enthusiastic and intelligent group.  It's such a pleasure.
