17:54:39  Moderator {public msg} hello everyone.  tonight we're joined by skip beaudine, the production manager for crusade.  go ahead and send in your questions.

 17:54:43  skip_beaudine {public msg} Hello,  It's good to be here tonight.

17:55:48  skip_beaudine {public msg} Hopefully, we will finish filming for the
day  at the same time the chat is done.

 17:56:16  skip_beaudine {public msg} Moderator is having a bit of troubles.
Julie will be right back.

 17:56:37  JoanDarc {question presented} Hell Skip..Welcome to tonite's chat,
glad you could come. What is your favorite thing about working on the new series?

17:57:42  skip_beaudine {public msg} It's always an exciting challenge starting a new show.  There always seems to be a new set of problems that go with the new show.

17:58:01  Reschell {question presented} Has all the experience with B5 shortcut any of the work for Crusade, or is Crusade an entirely different experience which needs to work out its own shortcuts.

17:58:43  skip_beaudine {public msg} there has been some short cuts but
Crusade is and entirely new show with entirely different problems.

17:59:05  skip_beaudine {public msg} It's exciting to be in the problem solving position.  It keeps you on your toes.

17:59:12  Doctor Rock {question presented} hello skip, would it be you who
was the first unit production manager for the project, that would have to mean you were one of the first few people to work on the getting the concept to life ?

 18:00:34  skip_beaudine {public msg} We've had other produciton managers.
Kevin Cremin was the first UPM on the series.  But there was someone else int he position for the piliot.  Iam the first and only production manager for Crusade.

 18:00:43  Reschell {question presented} From what you've learned on
B5/Crusade, is there something in particular that you wish could be adopted by Hollywood as a
whole?

 18:03:15  skip_beaudine {public msg} I'm stumpted.

18:03:16  O'Siochain {question presented} will Crusade have little ties in with
B5 that only people who watched all b5 before will understand?

 18:04:09  skip_beaudine {public msg} that's a question for Joe Straczynski.  I'm a money man.

18:04:15  Reschell {question presented} What do you think would surprise the
viewing audience most about what occurs backstage, either for B5 or Crusade?

18:04:44  skip_beaudine {public msg} How long it takes to film and how many
people it takes to film an episode.

 18:05:25  skip_beaudine {public msg} 12 hours a day, 5 days per week, 7 days
per episode and about 150 people.

 18:05:34  k57_in_deep_lurk {question presented} Who do you work most
closely with?

18:06:33  skip_beaudine {public msg} John copeland, the first assitant directors (Pam, Carla and Doug), the directors, and department heads

 18:06:37  Reschell {question presented} You said you're a money man -- does
that mean that you're responsible for matching the needs of the story with the requirements of the budget?

 18:07:37  skip_beaudine {public msg} yes, that's very well put.  that's where
my creativity come in.  matching the needs of the story with the budget.

18:07:43  JoanDarc {question presented} How would a typical day go for you in duties that you'd do on the set?

 18:08:26  skip_beaudine {public msg} I have a list on the wall.  (VBG)

 18:09:26  skip_beaudine {public msg} seriously .  the first theing I do when I
arrive I go to the set to check for problems.  most of the shooting crew has already been here for a while.

18:10:06  skip_beaudine {public msg} then, I go over the production report and moniter the costs of the previous days work.

 18:10:33  skip_beaudine {public msg} I then start working on the episode that
we are prearing to shoot next.

18:10:38  Reschell {question presented} Is there a particular element in a story that you know right away is going to put a strain on the budget, like costuming, say?

18:11:32  skip_beaudine {public msg} yes, but there are many area that that may
occur like stunts, needing adidtional camera equipment. anything can put you over the budget.

 18:11:47  k57_in_deep_lurk {question presented} What kinds of problems do
you handle?

18:13:00  skip_beaudine {public msg} tetchnical problems like having the wrong color blue screen or equipment problems

18:13:12  Moderator {public msg} moderator has a question: whats the best
problem you ever solved with regard to story needs versus budgetary constraints?

 18:14:59  skip_beaudine {public msg} the problems I solve are when we are
shooting.  for example if we are runnign late.  what is the most efficient way to spill over to the
next day.

18:15:01  Reschell {question presented} How exactly do you work on the
episode you're preparing to shoot next?  Lots of scribbled notes in the margin of a script?  Phone calls?  Tranquilizer darts? [g]

 18:16:17  skip_beaudine {public msg} breaking down t;he script .  looking for
production element, cranes, cast, extras, stunts, practical effects, finding those elements and start putting what it will cost to do those and putting them in the parameters of our budget.

 18:16:19  Ivanava {question presented} Skip - Confess....did Babylon 5 EVER
go over budget...and which episode sticks out in your mind as really eating up the money supply?

18:16:50  skip_beaudine {public msg} No.  I am proud to say that not one
episode went over budget.

 18:17:01  Moderator {public msg} moderator is impressed!

 18:18:20  skip_beaudine {public msg} I'm thinking.  Perhaps The Late Delivery
from Avalon.  Episode #312

18:18:48  skip_beaudine {public msg} that stick out because there were alot of
practical effects, a lot of added equipment.

18:19:01  Reschell {question presented} How can a blue screen be the wrong
color?  I thought a blue screen was a blue screen -- do you have "happy" blue screens vs. "tragic" blue screens?

18:19:26  skip_beaudine {public msg} well there are various shades of blue...

18:19:51  skip_beaudine {public msg} in a blue screen were are removing all of
the blue.  It need to be a sharp vibrant blue

18:20:33  skip_beaudine {public msg} in order for the computer to remove the
blue.  We are using a  new blue that recently received awards

18:20:35  Ivanava {question presented} Skip - How big a part of the budget will go to creating these new worlds the cast will visit each week? I hear that you have a group of scientists working with John Copeland to interject science based environments.

18:21:47  skip_beaudine {public msg} Percentage wise the art department has
about 15% bigger budget, approximately.

18:21:57  skip_beaudine {public msg} Yes, we ahve signed an agreement with
JPL.

18:22:00  JoanDarc {question presented} Have you ever been on the set during a time of high jinx ?

 18:22:20  skip_beaudine {public msg} Yes,  all the time.

 18:22:37  skip_beaudine {public msg} that's part of the fun of the job.

18:22:39  Reschell {question presented} Is there a particular tool of your trade
upon which you rely, like spreadsheet software or endless patience with aggravating details?

 18:22:56  skip_beaudine {public msg} movie magic budgeting!

18:22:57  Kaz {question presented} How far ahead do you look at scripts to see what is needed for that episode?

 18:23:23  skip_beaudine {public msg} i'm 4 or 5 scripts ahead

18:23:32  Rex {question presented} Are the caterers better on this production
than b5?

18:23:44  skip_beaudine {public msg} They are the same.  and they are great.

18:23:51  JoanDarc {question presented} any stand out in particular??? What
was it and who did it?? :) *blooper wise

 18:25:12  skip_beaudine {public msg} I think some of the best, funniest was
when our set painter, Matt, was fon the behind the set wall in the drazi hilton , and Matt climbed up the balcony in the middle of the shot which broke us all up.

18:25:23  Reschell {question presented} Is part of Production Management

 18:26:57  skip_beaudine {public msg} I get a script before the assistant director.

No?

18:31:19  skip_beaudine {public msg} definately have to have a sense of humor.  it's waht makes the day go by, fast.

18:31:23  Reschell {question presented} Are there lots of unemployed
Production Managers waiting tables, or does it tend to be better for regular employment than
acting?

 18:32:16  skip_beaudine {public msg} It's much more of a regular job than
acting. there are thousands of actors but probably 400 or 500 Production Managers.

18:32:19  Kaz {question presented} what is the average time it takes to work you way up the ladder? :)

 18:33:01  skip_beaudine {public msg} There is no time table.  the DGA's
Assitasnt Director Trainee program is a great way to get started.

18:33:03  Ivanava {question presented} Skip - You say you primarily work with John Copeland and the assistant directors...How often to you work with JMS?

18:33:29  skip_beaudine {public msg} His office is always open.  and he is
