chat with
Editors David Foster and Skip Robinson

17:57:39  david_foster {public msg} david is here

17:57:55  Moderator {public msg} Welcome.  The chat will begin in a few
minutes.  WE're still getting everything together.

17:57:56  skip_robinson {public msg} i'm here.

17:58:31  Moderator {public msg} Welcome to tonight's chat.

17:58:51  Bajele {question presented} How much freedom are you given to
"tweek" things as you edit.  Is there a method you follow?

18:00:10  david_foster {public msg} sorry for the delay...

18:00:32  david_foster {public msg} some freedom, however john and joe have
the final say as to what is on the screen.

18:01:08  Bajele {question presented} How much of the editing process takes
place in your mind beforehand and how much takes place at the computer as you work?

18:01:31  skip_robinson {public msg} 99%

18:02:02  Moderator {action} which is the 99%?

18:02:20  skip_robinson {public msg} I do all the cutting in my head, and the
changes in the computer

18:03:05  Moderator {action} david do you work the same?

18:04:01  david_foster {public msg} pretty much the same, although probably
less in my head t...maybe 70%

18:04:17  mfarah {question presented} Do you edit an episode by yourselves or
do you work as in team?

18:04:17  skip_robinson {public msg} I have a bigger head!

18:04:34  david_foster {public msg} i've been meaning to talk to you about thata
 skip!

18:04:51  skip_robinson {public msg} by myself and usually bounce things off
the editing assistants

18:05:31  skip_robinson {public msg} of course, we work with the director and
producers after my cut is finished

18:05:31  Reschell {question presented} Which is trickier to trim for time -- a
scene with actors or a cgi space scene?

18:05:51  skip_robinson {public msg} trickier to time for actors

18:05:54  skip_robinson {public msg} because

18:06:04  skip_robinson {public msg} sometimes performances are different

18:06:13  skip_robinson {public msg} cgi I can visualize

18:06:50  Reschell {question presented} What do the editing assistants actually
do, since it's hard to have more than one on a computer at a time?

18:07:05  skip_robinson {public msg} they paly games

18:07:08  skip_robinson {public msg} play

18:07:18  skip_robinson {public msg} they talk on the phone

18:07:23  skip_robinson {public msg} they make dubs

18:07:30  skip_robinson {public msg} they type slates

18:07:39  skip_robinson {public msg} pull sound effects

18:08:24  david_foster {public msg} eat lunch...etc....actually they are very
helpful with organizing the script, digitizing shots..

18:08:26  Happycaveman {question presented} What kinds of equipment do u
use? I have used a Quantel Edit Box. Is it better? Similar?

18:08:47  skip_robinson {public msg} avid in use here

18:09:05  skip_robinson {public msg} Edit box is not as versatile

18:09:30  skip_robinson {public msg} with a show like B5 you need all the tricks
you can get

18:09:54  david_foster {public msg} we offline on the avid, online to digibeta
using an axial edit controller...

18:10:19  Moderator {action} that sounds like gibberish to me.

18:10:42  Moderator {action}

18:10:55  Bajele {question presented} you mentioned dubs and slates....could
you please explain a little more about that?

18:11:32  skip_robinson {public msg} dubs are running off copies of shows and
CGI approvals for the producers

18:11:42  skip_robinson {public msg} usually on VHS

18:11:52  david_foster {public msg} slates are text messages put on the screen in
place of cgi (before cgi is delivered)

18:12:27  Reschell {question presented} "Type slates" -- sounds r-e-a-l-l-y hard
on typewriters (visions of Neanderthals whacking away at slabs of rock).  What does one do to
type a slate?

18:13:05  skip_robinson {public msg} a titling tool inside the computer, much
like you are typing right now!

18:13:29  Bruckner {question presented} How many episodes are you working
on at one time?

18:14:06  skip_robinson {public msg} it varies, 1-2-3 depending on when all the
CGI comes in.

18:14:24  VorlonSega {question presented} How long do you need to edit an
episode?

18:15:14  david_foster {public msg} there are three editors on the series..cutting
every thrid show

18:15:45  skip_robinson {public msg} It depends on how complicated an episode
is.  An easy ep is 9 days, a hard one is 11-13 days.  MOW is about a month.

18:15:50  skip_robinson {public msg} longer the better

18:16:12  Reschell {question presented} Editing seems, on the surface, to be a
strictly visual process.  But are you aware of using other senses, such as rhythm, or a musical
"flow"?

18:16:52  david_foster {public msg} yes this always comes in to play...of course
it depends on the scene...

18:16:55  skip_robinson {public msg} yes, you always have to consider where
 the music will be.

18:17:00  skip_robinson {public msg} the mood of the scene

18:17:11  skip_robinson {public msg} and how you want the viewer to feel

18:17:26  skip_robinson {public msg} and I feel like having a beer

18:17:49  david_foster {public msg} care to share skip?

18:17:55  Moderator {action} now remember to share

18:18:03  VorlonSega {question presented} Do you also edit in the Music?

18:18:13  david_foster {public msg} temp music yes

18:18:16  skip_robinson {public msg} temporary music

18:18:33  skip_robinson {public msg} some directors will put in more music than
others

18:18:37  david_foster {public msg} sometimes, the music is close to what will
be written for a scene

18:18:54  skip_robinson {public msg} we also add sound efx

18:19:09  skip_robinson {public msg} david has a LARGE library of efx

18:19:12  david_foster {public msg} and i share!

18:19:19  skip_robinson {public msg} NOT!

18:19:22  david_foster {public msg} so!

18:19:33  Moderator {action} By the Way, MOW means movie ofthe week

18:19:47  Reschell {question presented} Is there any particular kind of script
where you know from the outset that you're going to be banging your head(s) against the console
(but that you know you'll be really proud of once it's finished?

18:20:31  david_foster {public msg} not enough coverage is always a challenge

18:20:40  skip_robinson {public msg} yes, it depends upon the director.  you
never really know from the script.

18:21:07  david_foster {public msg} coverage is when you go in for the
closeups, etc.

18:21:16  Satai_Leo {question presented} On average...how many different shots
do you have of every scene?

18:21:32  david_foster {public msg} if you don't have good coverage, or not
enough..it makes it much harder to cut

18:21:57  skip_robinson {public msg} again, it depends upon the director and
action of the scene.

18:22:06  david_foster {public msg} 1 to 50 (skip says 75)...

18:22:17  skip_robinson {public msg} ha!

18:22:25  mfarah {question presented} What's the typical amount of footage
that's left in the editing room?

18:23:05  skip_robinson {public msg} In A Call to Arms, there was an hour and
a half for an 8 minute scene!

18:23:21  skip_robinson {public msg} but we always keep the jokes for the
bloopers!

18:23:30  Bruckner {question presented} Whose idea was it to start the bloopers
and how long does it take to create one reel?

18:23:54  skip_robinson {public msg} my idea!

18:24:04  david_foster {public msg} it takes all season along...and then some

18:24:12  skip_robinson {public msg} we takes snips from each show and save
 them

18:24:25  Bruckner {question presented} It seems as if Peter Jurasik has some of
the more structured bloopers.  Does he do things like the "soft-shoe" just for the blooper reel?

18:24:30  skip_robinson {public msg} but it takes a long time to edit...but they
are real funny!

18:24:33  david_foster {public msg} it's always a crunch to get the reel done
before the wrap party...

18:24:53  skip_robinson {public msg} yes, Peter is the best blooper-giver

18:25:00  skip_robinson {public msg} Jerry is great too!

18:25:11  david_foster {public msg} ...but it's worth it...the cast really enjoys it
(provided there not on screen too often)

18:25:23  K57 {question presented} Who edit's the blooper reels?

18:25:28  david_foster {public msg} we all do

18:25:55  skip_robinson {public msg} we all do the bloop's - tag team effort
'cause it takes so long

18:26:17  david_foster {public msg} actually we draw straws...

18:26:18  skip_robinson {public msg} it starts with music selection

18:26:33  skip_robinson {public msg} you can't draw!

18:26:50  david_foster {public msg} one of our assistants, john burrus is our
music library...

18:27:22  david_foster {public msg} you don't call stick figures drawing skip?

18:27:27  skip_robinson {public msg} Maritza, our assistant is an enormous help
on the gag reeels

18:27:43  JoanDarc {question presented} what do you both think is probably the
funniest thing (your own personal fav) from whichever cast members best blooper?

18:28:37  david_foster {public msg} season 4...when the Pak'Mara runs into the
wall and bruce loses it...

18:28:43  skip_robinson {public msg} Peter with Jerry singing potatoe - potatoe,
let's call the whole thing off!

18:28:51  david_foster {public msg} good one skip!

18:29:04  skip_robinson {public msg} thank you david

18:29:13  Bajele {question presented} Which shows have come out the way you
envisioned?

18:29:31  skip_robinson {public msg} all of them!

18:29:39  david_foster {public msg} skip?

18:29:45  skip_robinson {public msg} It's not easy to be perfect!

18:29:51  david_foster {public msg} you ok?

18:30:02  JoanDarc {question presented} How did you get the postions as editrs
for the show (btw its truely AWESOME-the best on TV: You both deserve major kudos/2 thumbs up for excellent work you, the cast & rest of crew do)??

18:30:06  david_foster {public msg} beer getting to your head?

18:30:44  skip_robinson {public msg} thank you for the kind words...I started
off as a gofer, then an assistant

18:31:25  JoanDarc {question presented} how long have you both been working
in this area and have you always been interested in doing editing? :)

18:31:32  david_foster {public msg} i got a call from john copeland in 1993...i
had worked with him on and off for several years

18:31:58  skip_robinson {public msg} 12 years and yes, I've always wanted to
be an editor

18:32:09  Happycaveman {question presented} I love editing. I was thinking of
going to Full Sail, where did u go? and do u have any suggestions?

18:32:10  david_foster {public msg} i love editing...have been at it since 1974
(yes i'm an 'old' guy)

18:33:11  skip_robinson {public msg} I learned on the job.  I started with an avid
when it first came out as a beta tester and grew into it.

18:33:11  david_foster {public msg} get practical experience anyway you can...

18:33:53  Reschell {question presented} When you watch a movie or another TV
show, are you able to just go with the flow, or are you always evaluating the editing?

18:34:10  david_foster {public msg} depends on whether it's noticeable or not

18:34:17  skip_robinson {public msg} it depends on how bad the editing is!

18:34:22  david_foster {public msg} if it's good, i don't see it

18:34:30  skip_robinson {public msg} editiing should be seamless!

18:34:44  skip_robinson {public msg} unles you are trying to jar the viewer

18:34:48  david_foster {public msg} or at least done with invisible staples!

18:35:01  skip_robinson {public msg} crazy glue works too

18:35:08  B5fanatic {question presented} I read the tnt spoiler about a cgi effect
that made Jerry/Garibaldi's eyes red because *someone* forgot to erase the red eyes he had been playing with... How often does this happen.....on purpose?

18:35:13  david_foster {public msg} sticks to your fingers though...

18:35:48  david_foster {public msg} don't know about this one...skip?

18:36:18  skip_robinson {public msg} not often, but there are other easter eggs
(hidden things) just for fun

18:36:29  VorlonSega {question presented} Do you often edit scenes with inside
jokes left in?

18:37:23  skip_robinson {public msg} most of the jokes the viewers will know

18:37:29  skip_robinson {public msg} except...

18:37:48  skip_robinson {public msg} the behing the scenes jokes that only the
cast/crew would know

18:37:58  david_foster {public msg} joe can catch anything...it won't go out
unless he likes it

18:38:06  mfarah {question presented} YOu mention a third editor.  Who is it?

18:38:19  skip_robinson {public msg} like the one about Ivanova left B5 in 505

18:39:08  david_foster {public msg} seasons 1 thru 4 was suzy sternlicht...kathie
burr did season 5

18:39:32  skip_robinson {public msg} and suzy did River of Souls

18:39:39  Reschell {question presented} Do either of you have a personal favorite
B5 episode as a "best of the best" for your editing?

18:40:10  skip_robinson {public msg} Mine is Intersections in Real Time #517

18:40:17  david_foster {public msg} i really liked ep. 417 "the face of the
enemy"....420 "endgame" is a favorite also

18:40:29  skip_robinson {public msg} Because it wasn't done how it was written

18:40:58  skip_robinson {public msg} Intersections is #418, duh!

18:41:23  skip_robinson {public msg} My fav of Davids was 420

18:41:43  skip_robinson {public msg} hell of an editor that david

18:41:46  david_foster {public msg} in 417 all joe added for sheridan's capture
scene was one shot...a reverse of him falling

18:42:01  david_foster {public msg} thank you skip!

18:42:17  david_foster {public msg} check's on your desk!

18:42:27  Mutai {question presented} do you remember a scene that was
particularly memoriable because it perhaps surprized even you at how well it worked

18:42:30  skip_robinson {public msg} merci

18:43:25  skip_robinson {public msg} I think the structure of 418 "Intersections"
was cool cause it was all in one room!

18:43:34  david_foster {public msg} i really like 418...

18:43:49  mfarah {question presented} BTW... who edited _Whatever Happened
to Mr. Garibaldi?_ and why was the Garibaldi scene done that way?

18:44:17  Moderator {action} We have about 10 or 15 minures left.

18:45:01  david_foster {public msg} i did that show...if your talking about the
scene where he goes nuts...john gave me the idea

18:45:15  david_foster {public msg} about the jump cutting...

18:45:20  Reschell {question presented} Do the editors participate in the pre-
shoot "tone meetings?"

18:46:25  skip_robinson {public msg} not the tone meetings, we participate in
audio spotting, online, dirt fixes

18:46:55  david_foster {public msg} color timing, sitting in on the mix...

18:46:56  skip_robinson {public msg} pre-production meetings

18:47:38  VorlonSega {question presented} You mentioned that you started as a
gofer, is there alot of "in-house" promotion on B5?

18:47:39  skip_robinson {public msg} we do more than other episodics editors
on any other show

18:48:05  david_foster {public msg} several people have been promoted from
within....

18:48:17  skip_robinson {public msg} not all make it

18:48:33  skip_robinson {public msg} maritza will make it

18:48:54  david_foster {public msg} the streets are littered with them!!!

18:49:06  david_foster {public msg} ...just joking

18:49:25  skip_robinson {public msg} yes she is always around

18:49:26  Bajele {question presented} Have either of you worked in the Science
Fiction genre before?

18:49:58  david_foster {public msg} no

18:50:11  skip_robinson {public msg} no but is fun and that imagination.

18:50:42  skip_robinson {public msg} it's likeplaying space

18:50:44  Moderator {action} We only have time for one or two more questions.

18:51:24  Reschell {question presented} If you don't edit in final music, who
does?

18:51:46  skip_robinson {public msg} Mike Payne at EFX lays it in

18:52:06  skip_robinson {public msg} Mike was in the Comlink two weeks
ago...

18:52:59  Moderator {action} for the person who know nothing about the post
process, can you tell us what happens after production has finished the filming?

18:53:27  skip_robinson {public msg} this is a long process

18:53:51  david_foster {public msg} first coffee...ya gotta have good
coffee...and burrus makes the best!

18:53:53  skip_robinson {public msg} send copies to EFX

18:53:59  skip_robinson {public msg} read paper

18:54:04  skip_robinson {public msg} online the show

18:54:11  skip_robinson {public msg} color time

18:54:17  skip_robinson {public msg} go for lunch

18:54:21  david_foster {public msg} then the lunch decision...this is very
important

18:54:22  skip_robinson {public msg} mix

18:54:30  skip_robinson {public msg} title the show

18:56:14  skip_robinson {public msg} for more information on editing, call david
at 888-555-1212

18:56:18  NTO {question presented} What the heck is a "dirt fix"???

18:56:43  skip_robinson {public msg} david is the dirt fix king

18:56:59  david_foster {public msg} dirt sometimes gets on the negative, either in
camera or during transfer...

18:57:42  david_foster {public msg} if it's noticeable enough...it's either got to
be re-transferred or removed afterwards

18:57:47  skip_robinson {public msg} you see dirt in old movies

18:57:53  david_foster {public msg} we do that here in our online bay

18:58:02  Happycaveman {question presented} Thanks for your time. Its good to
talk to someone who knows what you're talking about :)
