17:58:04  Moderator {public msg} sorry my other computer already crashed

17:58:35  Moderator {public msg} Welcome again.  Now for the questions

 17:58:47  david_eagle {public msg} 13 episodes to be exact!

17:59:02  NemoDream {question presented} What was the most difficult part about directing the episodes?

 17:59:18  david_eagle {public msg} Getting up in the morning!

17:59:54  david_eagle {public msg} Actually, big scenes are usually the most difficult and time consuming

18:01:11  Cedra {question presented} David, which was the most rewarding project that you have ever worked on?  What made it the most rewarding?

18:04:10  david_eagle {public msg} There are several.  The Writing On The Wall, 50 Simple Things Kids Can Do To Save The Earth and Kids Killing Kids were most rewarding non-B5 shows

18:04:35  K57 {question presented} how do you prepare for the shoot?

 18:04:57  david_eagle {public msg} Very carefully

 18:05:03  david_eagle {public msg} Actually

 18:05:11  david_eagle {public msg} ...

18:05:48  david_eagle {public msg} I imerse myself in the script and shoot the show in my head and on paper before we begin shooting

18:06:28  Dr_rock {question presented} Can you just give us a rundown on what a director does in a B5 production. SOme of us have no real idea when we see "Directed By" what the job actually entails

18:07:06  david_eagle {public msg} I work with casting director and producers to cast the actors in the show...

18:07:50  david_eagle {public msg} then I break down the script and meet with various depts (art, effects, etc) to discuss and plan sets, props, effects...

18:08:22  david_eagle {public msg} then I write a shot list and description of how I plan to shoot each scene...

18:09:24  david_eagle {public msg} I meet with Joe and John several times to discuss the tone of the show and of the scenes and how I plan to shoot it

18:10:22  Bluee {question presented} how long in advance to you get the script before needing to start shooting?

18:11:32  david_eagle {public msg} I usually get the script about a month prior to shooting

18:11:41  Sparky {question presented} How is editing on a computer different from the  conventional way?

 18:13:22  david_eagle {public msg} It's faster

18:13:31  Captain_stansi {question presented} To you, what is Babylon 5? What does it mean? What does it stand for?

 18:14:26  david_eagle {public msg} 2#@%&*(+! ?

 18:14:41  david_eagle {public msg} But seriously...

18:15:33  david_eagle {public msg} I love this show.  It's not just any old show to me.  It's smart and...

18:15:54  david_eagle {public msg} lots of fun,  And the peolple are wonderful

18:16:34  Bnatural {question presented} Do you take classes to be a director?

 18:16:53  david_eagle {public msg} I didn't, but some people do

18:18:22  Cedra {question presented} David, what is next on your professional agenda?

 18:18:58  david_eagle {public msg} I'm currently writing , producing and directing a documentary on The Holocaust

18:19:23  Cisco {question presented} You directed "Severed Dreams" - did you have any idea how big an episode it would turn out to be as you were making it?

18:19:54  david_eagle {public msg} I knew it was going to be big, but it turned out to be even bigger!

18:20:17  Captain_stansi {question presented} What was your reaction when you found out about the Hugo?

18:20:51  david_eagle {public msg} I was thrilled and very happy for JMS, John and Doug

 18:21:28  Bnatural {question presented} Have you directed Blue-screen scences?

 18:21:40  david_eagle {public msg} Many

18:22:08  Moderator {public msg} a questin form me - How do you direct one - how is it different

 18:22:16  Moderator {public msg} good spelling

 18:22:37  david_eagle {public msg} one?

 18:22:45  Moderator {public msg} a blue screen shot

18:24:28  david_eagle {public msg} Blue screen simply means that you are substituting the background with a blue screen which allows you to add any background later.  Directing it is not really any different than any other shot except that you light it differently and the characters and camera may have to move a little differently

18:24:59  Nurflugel {question presented} is there a round number reflecting the number of takes a scene requires?

18:26:34  david_eagle {public msg} No. Each scene is different.  Some are done in one take, some take 17!

18:26:44  Morgana {question presented} Are the episodes storyboarded before they're shot?

18:27:20  david_eagle {public msg} Very few are storyboarded.  In 13 episodes, I storyboarded only one scene

18:28:47  Moderator {public msg} a message from the Moderator:  We upgraded the ;Ichat software.  You may have noticed that the Auditorium is different

18:29:18  Moderator {public msg} Make sure you put "/ask" before your questin to send it to me.  or press the red question mark.

18:29:42  NancyF {question presented} Does JMS get involved in the direction at all, or does he pretty much leave it up to the director?

18:30:45  david_eagle {public msg} He leaves it mostly up to the director.  But if I have any questions about some directorial point or appraoch, I won't hesitate to ask him

18:30:54  Moderator {public msg} Tommorow we are having an on-line wrap party in the comlink.  Make sure you come and visit us tomorrow .  We will have visits from the cdast and crew, and trivia contests and prizes too!

18:31:30  Bnatural {question presented} Do you ever have trouble explaing what it is you want an actor to do?

18:32:10  david_eagle {public msg} Rarely, but it happens.  You must constantly be on your toes to make sure that you are expressing a point clearly

 18:32:34  Klag {question presented} What is "storyboarding"?

18:33:22  david_eagle {public msg} It is breaking down the script into little pictures, sketches that show exactly what the real shot should look like

18:33:57  Moderator {public msg} my computer died again

18:35:22  Moderator {public msg} I'm workign on getting another question

18:35:39  Morgana {question presented} What was the most difficult episode you had to direct and why?

18:36:21  david_eagle {public msg} Severed Dreams was the most difficult because of it's huge scope and many challenges

 18:37:33  Moderator {public msg} mycomputer is...

 18:37:38  Moderator {public msg} annoying

 18:38:29  Moderator {public msg} onmoment or two

18:38:39  Cedra {question presented} David, what does conventional editing consist of?

18:40:41  david_eagle {public msg} That's when you actually, physically cut film.  No the film is all transferred to tape and then the tape is fed into the computer editor which is called digitizing, and then we use and edit digital images.

18:40:49  Moderator {public msg} We have about 15 minutes left.  So Think up some good questions for David.

18:41:03  EntilZha Carolyn {question presented} The cinimatography was great in The Very Long Night of Londo Mollari.  Was it your idea?

18:42:43  Moderator {public msg} By the way, the only thing that appears on the "Stage" which is where David and I are, is what david and I type and the question  stuff

18:42:54  david_eagle {public msg} Yeah, I thought it was so good, I told JMS I thought we should get a camera and shoot it!...

 18:43:03  david_eagle {public msg} Just kidding...

18:43:09  Moltar {question presented} How much does the director get involved with editing?

18:43:28  david_eagle {public msg} John Flinn is resposible for all the great cinematography

18:44:20  david_eagle {public msg} Very much involved in editing.  After I finish shooting, I usually send a few days editing with the editor

 18:44:28  david_eagle {public msg} spend

18:45:05  Moderator {public msg} to ask a question - you need to type    /ask   before you type your question or else it willnot be sent to me  and David willnot see it

18:45:26  david_eagle {public msg} By the way, SEVERED DREAMS is on tomorrow

18:45:27  Moderator {public msg} to be able to answer it

18:46:44  Cedra {question presented} David, I hear you were on the set when they were shooting the Bo and Mack show.  Any funny things happen that week?

18:47:34  david_eagle {public msg} It was lots of fun to watch.  The script was funny and sometimes the actors would enhance the humor

18:48:30  Cedra {question presented} Was it hard to leave Tragedy of Telepaths hanging?

18:52:29  david_eagle {public msg} Who said they are left hanging?

18:52:29  david_eagle {public msg} Who said they were left hanging?

18:52:29  david_eagle {public msg} Who says they were left hanging?

 18:52:37  Moderator {public msg} Hello

 18:52:50  Moderator {public msg} We' had a bit of a problem

 18:52:59  david_eagle {public msg} I noticed!

18:53:50  Moderator {public msg} We have time for one or two more questions.

18:54:51  Nurflugel {question presented} David, is it easier to shoot scenes with a minimum of background detail; I've seen a lot of work which seems more akin to a stage......

18:55:36  david_eagle {public msg} The less details in a scene, the less things you have to worry about...

18:55:50  david_eagle {public msg} some things just result in a stage like look

18:56:31  Nostrodia {question presented} What do you find most difficult about directing B5?

18:57:58  david_eagle {public msg} The most difficult directorial challenge for me are the really big scenes with 15 stuntmen in hand to hand combat and 100 extras

 18:59:31  Moderator {public msg} One last question

18:59:35  Mickeym {question presented} Hi, how difficult is it to maintain momentum when you have to film out of sequence? Is it mentally disrupting? I hope that made sense...

19:00:26  Moderator {public msg} David will go to the Comlink for a while afterwards

19:00:38  david_eagle {public msg} Yes it is mentally disrupting but it's something an experienced directors and actors are used to.  We film in logical sequence

 19:01:00  david_eagle {public msg} Yes, for a few mins

19:01:17  Klag {question presented} Mr. Eagle, thank you for stopping by.

 19:01:26  david_eagle {public msg} My pleasure

 19:01:36  Moderator {public msg} Thank you David.

 19:01:50  david_eagle {public msg} You're welcome

19:02:01  Moderator {public msg} There will be a transcript of tonights chat available in the Cultural Center, next week.

19:03:31  Moderator {public msg} You will need to go to comlink prior to logging off or else next time you try to enter the Comlink you will autimatically appear here in the Auditorium.
